Tanara Haynes joined Umoja in 2019. She serves the Umoja Community as the Operations Director. The scope of her work includes the development and implementations of policies, procedures and best practices that support Umoja's mission. Tanara will be leading the way to creating strong infrastructure through policies and systems that contribute to the strength and unity of the organization. Tanara serves on Umoja's executive leadership team.
Tanara studied Journalism and African American- studies at Howard University. After receiving her undergraduate degree, she went on to pursue a Masters in Pan African Studies from Syracuse Universityin Syracuse, NY. As a student, she continued to teach and build with the community by providing culturally relevant and educational events. During her time as a graduate student, Tanara also traveled to East Africa where she conducted research on the legitimacy of traditional healing, with a specific focus on the arts, to bring about holistic wellness and combat diseases. Tanara has extensive knowledge in the education and non-profit field serving as a Project Manager, Event Coordinator, Program Manager, Teacher, and Mentor.
Outside of work, Tanara enjoys laughing, reading, singing, and traveling with her 3-year-old daughter. She is also an advocate of birth-work, support, and justice as a Post-Partum and Labor Doula.
