Call for New Board Members

Sacramento, CA (November 26, 2023) – The Umoja Community Education Foundation is pleased to announce the official call for new board members. Our Board of Directors is comprised of dedicated community leaders who provide strength and stability to Umoja’s infrastructure. We are seeking excited new board members whose talent, expertise and energy can further Umoja’s vision as a preeminent global educational organization that provides transformative, emancipatory education to uplift and inspire academic excellence of self-actualization for students of African descent.” 

Why become an Umoja board member? 

Umoja Board members are community leaders and members who have a deep interest in ensuring educational equity, access, and opportunity for students. Participating Board members learn the needs of Black students in the state of California and the best and most promising practices for student achievement. Benefits include critical educational networking, access to key leaders in the public educational systems, and collaboration among key voices in education including students, educators, policymakers, and others. Board members also impart their experience, wisdom, and shared values to a powerful group of leaders.  

What is the Board Member's Commitment? 

Umoja Board members commit to full engagement and participation in meetings, activities, and events to support the mission of Umoja including strategic planning, fund development, advocacy, and participation in statewide activities. On average, board members commit 2-3 hours per month. 

What are the preferred qualifications? 

  • Proven leadership 
  • Previous board experience 
  • Knowledge and/or experience with nonprofit organizations 
  • Experience with large and complex organizations 

Ideal nominees may be higher education leaders, financial planners, corporate/private business leaders, political leaders, community activists and/or corporate development officers.
